It was my turn to take Dwight to his monthly doctor’s appointment to monitor a growth under his arm. The doctors had run a biopsy and determined that it was benign. But they were keeping a close eye on it due to his medical history. Mama and Daddy felt that things went smoother when I went with him, because not only was I the closest person to Dwight, I was also a registered nurse at the hospital that he visited, and put him right in the door with the most reputable physicians, people that I knew on a first name basis.

At twelve-years-old, I watched a nurse save Dwight’s life after he succumbed to a seizure during one of his many stays in the ICU. And from that day on, I knew I wanted to be a nurse. Seemingly, in one motion, she’d turned him on his side—a teenage boy almost twice her size—and placed a compressor in his mouth to prevent him from swallowing his tongue, all while I watched from a corner near his bed. Mama and Daddy’d stepped out to grab a snack from the vending machine, takin Seth along with them and leaving me with Dwight because he begged for me to stay. And it was a good thing he did, because he seized just minutes after they left. I’d been drilled on hitting the call button if anything went wrong and it didn’t take me a second to do just that.

“You sad, Neddy?” Dwight asked as I drove down the freeway on our way home after his appointment.

“What? No, D. Why’d you ask me that?” I glanced over at him, handsome face covered in vanilla ice cream that he begged for when we almost passed McDonalds.

“Cause your face is droopy. Who did it? Big nosed Darryl?” He asked, licking his ice cream and looking out the window.

“No, D!” I giggled. “I’m not friends with Big... I’m not friends with Darryl anymore.” I signaled to get into the far-right lane then exited I-45, merging onto the feeder.

“Can I ask you something, D?” I was confiding in my brother, because his mental capacity made him the most honest person I knew.

“Yep.” He popped the last of his ice cream cone in his mouth. “I hope it wasn’t for ice cream, cause ain’t no more!” He slapped his knee laughing and I shook my head, laughing too.

“Greedy butt!” I nudged his big arm with my elbow, then relaxed my smile. “Do you think I’d be a good Mama?” I asked. That question had been whirling in my mind, along with others. But I couldn’t exactly ask Dwight if I’d be a good wife, since he couldn’t possibly have any understanding of that.

“Oh yeah!” He nodded his head. “You always take good care of me, Neddy. You saved my life, remember? That’s what good mamas do. They pay attention and keep the babies safe.”

He looked at me, wearing a huge smile while running his thumb under the seatbelt across his chest to make sure it was secure like I’d taught him since I learned how to drive.
